Eosinophils are a type of white blood cell that helps your body respond to allergies and fight parasites, and the absolute count tells you how many of them are circulating in a set volume of blood. What the eosinophil count measures
The absolute eosinophil count reports the actual number of eosinophils per microliter of blood, rather than their percentage of total white cells. These cells release enzymes and signaling molecules that target parasites and drive allergic inflammation. Measuring them directly helps separate a true rise in eosinophils from shifts caused by changes in other white cell types.
What high or low levels mean
A high absolute count, called eosinophilia, most often reflects allergic conditions such as hay fever, eczema, or asthma. Counts above roughly 500 cells/µL can also point to parasitic (helminth) infections, drug reactions, and certain skin disorders. Markedly elevated or persistent levels sometimes signal less common conditions, including autoimmune disease, some cancers, or hypereosinophilic syndrome, which can affect the heart and lungs. A low count is common and usually not a concern, since acute stress, infection, and corticosteroid medications naturally suppress eosinophils. You should follow up when a high count persists across repeat tests, keeps climbing, or comes with symptoms like rash, wheezing, weight loss, or digestive trouble.

What does it mean if your eosinophils are high?
Elevated eosinophils usually reflect allergies, asthma, or eczema. Higher levels can also indicate parasitic infection, a reaction to medication, or, less often, an autoimmune or blood disorder that warrants further testing by your clinician.
Should you worry about low eosinophils?
A low or near-zero eosinophil count is rarely a problem on its own. It commonly follows physical stress, acute infection, or steroid use, and clinicians generally focus on other results rather than the low value.
What is considered a dangerous eosinophil level?
Counts above about 1,500 cells/µL that persist can define hypereosinophilic syndrome, which may damage organs. Any sustained, unexplained elevation deserves prompt medical evaluation and monitoring.
